Presidents Blog, Veterans Day 2015

Shipmates, I want to wish all of you a happy Veterans Day.  I also wanted to let you know that in honor of Veterans Day, I was asked to share my military background/experience with the students at Hanover Highlands Elementary School in Hanover Park, IL.   The support and warm greeting that I got from the Principal and her staff was nothing short of outstanding.  They were all so appreciative that I would give up part of my day to talk with their students, but the fact is, that I was honored to be asked and given the opportunity to talk about the Navy and in particular the Great Ship Nimitz.  The School Librarian gave me a folder that included colored pictures, some very nice handwritten notes and poppies from several of the students.  I laid them out and took pictures of all of them (see below) to share with all of you.  In a separate note from the Librarian she wrote, “From myself, thank you for your service to our country.  I greatly appreciate my freedom on a d ...

President's Blog, August 2015

I cannot believe it is late August already!  The reunion in Colorado Springs is only a a month and a half away.   Please be sure to get your registration form in and your hotel rooms booked as soon as you can.  The deadline for hotel reservations is Sept 14. I look forward to seeing everyone there!!  It has been an exciting and fun summer.   I was privileged to attend the welcome-home ceremony at Midway Airport for WWII veterans who participated in Honor Flight Chicago.   Honor Flight is designed to value the American veteran as one of our greatest national treasures.  It was created to honor those men and women who answered our nations call, especially in times of our greatest need.  The mission of Honor Flight is to thank and pay tribute to those heroes (especially our WWII veterans), by bringing them to Washington D.C. for a day of honor and remembrance at no cost to them.   They arrive at Midway Airport 4am, fly to Washingto ...

President's Blog December 2014

Season’s Greetings Shipmates!!! Tis the Season to be busy and therefore, I apologize for my delay in updating my blog. There has been a good deal of work going on behind the scenes and I will attempt to bring you all up to speed.   We discovered that along with about 3000 other organization, our tax exempt status was revoked by the government.   Thanks to the tireless efforts of Phyllis and Ed (mostly Phyllis) Deats we have reapplied and should be good to go moving forward.  In order to make sure our application was accurate and compliant with all of the federal laws, it necessitated that we make some “tweaks” to the bylaws.   The Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Spouse advocate and myself convened on a call to review the required changes to the bylaws and temporarily approved them pending formal discussion and ratification at the next annual meeting in Colorado Springs.  We will also be proposing a change to the bylaws that sets up an ...
